- SHORT GLIMPSE
- Air India Express has successfully completed its IATA Safety Audit.
- Last year, its parent company had completed the same.
- IOSA audit highlights the commitment of Air India Express towards safety.
Air India Express, the low-cost carrier under the TATA Group has announced the successful completion of its IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA). International Air Transport Association (IATA) conducts this audit to assess key safety areas of the airline’s operations.
The Chief Executive Officer of Air India Express Aloke Singh has announced the successful completion of the IOSA audit. He emphasized that this accomplishment underscores the airline’s steadfast commitment to prioritize safety, security, and operational excellence. IOSA is known for its rigid evaluation process.
An IOSA registration serves two primary purposes: enhancing airline operational safety and improving efficiency.
Under the IOSA audit, IATA covers key areas such as:
- Corporate Organization and Management
- Flight Operations
- Operational Control/Flight Dispatch
- Aircraft Engineering & Maintenance
- Cabin Operations
- Aircraft Ground Handling
- Cargo Operations
- Operational Security
By successfully completing this audit, the airline has assured its world-class safety standards. The history of the airline has not been the best. In the past 15 years, Air India Express has been the only airline that has suffered fatal crashes. Two Boeing 737 crashes in 2010 and 2020 at Mangaluru and Kozhikode Airport are scripted in the airline’s history.
Growing Position of Indian Carriers
IATA selects airlines for this audit based on several criteria. Airlines can voluntarily apply for the audit, or IATA may require an airline to undergo the audit as a condition for membership or for compliance with certain regulatory requirements.
For example, Air India and SpiceJet successfully completed their risk-based approach audit of IATA in 2023. This is a new form of IOSA audit, which is customized to assess the specific requirements of airlines. Last year, a total of seven airlines had completed their IOSA audit, out of which two were Indian carriers. The remaining airlines were American Airlines, LATAM, Luxair, British Airways, and Qatar Airways.
Indian carriers are gradually growing their position within IATA. In 2023, Air India was included in the top 20 signatories of IATA’s Safety Leadership Charter. In 2025, IndiGo will be hosting the IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM). This way, IATA AGM returns to India after 42 years.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers has been appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of IATA.
