- SUMMARY
- On Saturday, IndiGo aircraft was taken to isolation bay after a bomb threat.
- The caller, a woman has been nabbed.
- Delhi Police is further investigating the matter.
In the recent past, bomb threat incidents have become a huge menace at Indian airports. At least four domestic and one international flight has received such hoax threats. In one of these cases, Delhi Police has nabbed the threatmaker. The accused is a female resident from Noida, who wanted her husband to get off from the aircraft.
IndiGo Flight Gets Bomb Threat: Caller Arrested
Before knowing about the reason for making the threat, let us first take a look at the incident. An IndiGo aircraft was operating flight 6E2232 from Varanasi to Delhi. During the flight, the airport authorities received a phone call, in which a women caller claimed that there is a bomb inside the aircraft. During this call, the aircraft was already airborne. It landed safely at Delhi Airport, where it underwent detailed search by the security enforcement agencies.
Now, let us know the reason of this threat. The lady who made the call is wife of Vimal Kumar, who was a passenger onboard the IndiGo flight. According to Times of India, the lady read some news reports and suspected that there was a bomb inside the aircraft, onboard which Vimal is travelling.
As a result of which, she called the Varanasi Airport Authority in panic and wanted her husband to deboard immediately. This call was made when the flight was already airborne.
Bad Mental Condition
When the lady made the call, she initially said that she is a passenger traveling with her husband. When asked that how can she call from a high altitude, she said that there is a bomb inside the aircraft onboard which her husband is traveling. She was asked that how is she aware of this? Her answer was that she has been reading a lot about bomb threats nowadays. Add to this, her husband did not pick up her call before boarding, which increased her anxiety.
Airport officials said that even after the call, we made a decision to continue the flight journey. When it landed in Delhi, it was investigated. The director of Varanasi Airport confirmed this incident and added that he was in constant touch with pilots and Delhi airport officials.
According to a report from Hindustan Times, the lady is mentally challenged. The Delhi Police have detained her and are verifying the health claims.
No Punishment: No Enforcement
I have been covering Indian aviation for the past many years. I have come across hundreds of such incidents. In the majority of these cases, there are four reasons as follows:
-
- Bad mental condition of the caller
-
- Publicity stunt
-
- Showing stupidity
-
- Getting late for a flight, lets make a bomb threat to delay the flight.
If you are wondering about the difference between the 3rd and 4th points, let me make the 3rd point more clear. For example, a passenger uses the aircraft lavatory and jokingly leaves a note, stating “BOMB“. Or a passenger during check-in asks the security staff why are you doing extensive checking. I am not carrying a “BOMB“. I count such passengers in the third point.
In the first reason, the police itself refrain from taking any action because of health reasons. Usually, station bail is granted. In 2nd, 3rd, and 4th case, the police can arrest the person and produce them in front of the court. But they can get bail within one day. The Indian Government should impose a significant amount of fine for the last three categories. So that people think twice before being insensitive and disturbing airport operations.
Conclusion: Bomb Threat Menace Increasing
IndiGo flight 6E2232 yesterday received a bomb threat. The aircraft safely landed at Delhi Airport. Upon landing, it was thoroughly checked. The lady, who made the call has been detained by Delhi Police. The accused has claimed that she is mentally unfit.
What do you think about imposition of fines on such passengers? Discuss in the comment section.
