A new airline is ready to commence flight operations within the Lufthansa Group. Lufthansa City, the new regional counterpart of Lufthansa is all set to operate its first flight in June month. The IATA code of Lufthansa City is VL.
Lufthansa City Debut Flight
Lufthansa City has scheduled its debut flight on June 26. The airline will kickstart commercial operations, with the first route from Munich to Birmingham. This airline will work as a regional feeder for Lufthansa and will facilitate traffic to major hubs like Frankfurt and Munich. In the initial phase, Lufthansa City will connect Munich to various destinations across Europe, as well as domestic cities within Germany.
Jens Fehlinger, Managing Director of Lufthansa City Airlines said that the regional airline will play a crucial role in ensuring the viability of the Munich and Frankfurt hubs. He added that the airline is eager for the delivery of new Airbus A220 and Airbus A320neo in coming years. City Airlines will feed the regional traffic to long-haul flights of Lufthansa originating out of Frankfurt and Munich
From April 24, 2024, passengers will be able to book their tickets on Lufthansa City flights. The designator IATA code of this airline is VL. Passengers looking for a long-haul flight can transit via Munich.
Further Expansion
In February 2024, in an official statement, Lufthansa announced that City Airlines will commence operations connecting Munich to six domestic and three international airports. The domestic cities include Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen, Dusseldorf, Cologne, and Hannover. VL will connect Munich internationally to Birmingham, Bordeaux, and Manchester. Over time, the airline will add these destinations to its booking portal.
In Financial Year 2025, Lufthansa City will start operations from Frankfurt Airport in the same way, as a feeder airline.
Which Aircraft is The Airline Operating?
Lufthansa City will start operations with a couple of Airbus A319s, inherited from fellow Lufthansa Group partner- Eurowings. According to a report from ch-aviation.com, the airline will initially have a fleet of four Airbus A319s. A few more units will join the airline in FY2025 when it launches the Frankfurt operations.
A search through plane tracking websites shows that City Airlines has three aircraft ready for operations. These 3 Airbus A319-100 jets are registered as D-ABGH, D-ABGK, and D-ABGP. The first one is currently undergoing maintenance at Munich Airport. The remaining two are parked at the same place. The first two wear the Lufthansa City livery. The average age of Lufthansa City aircraft is 16.1 years.
For its future, Lufthansa City has already ordered 40 Airbus A220 jets in December 2023. It has opted for an additional 20 options. Delivery of the first Airbus A220 is anticipated in 2026. With growth in the number of aircraft, the number of destinations and routes will grow, intensifying the network.
