- SUMMARY
- Delhi Police has caught the boy who threatened Air Canada flight with a bomb.
- The boy is a minor, and is just 13 years old.
- His parents were unaware of this bomb threat.
Some days ago, Air Canada flight AC43 from Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) received a bomb threat. Delhi Airport received a threat mail, in which the sender stated that a bomb had been planted inside the aircraft, and it could blow at any time.
As per the established protocols, the aircraft was taken to an isolation bay, where security agencies performed a detailed search. Finally, authorities have nabbed a 13-year-old boy from Meerut.
Minor Boy Behind the Air Canada Bomb Threat
Nothing suspicious was found inside the aircraft, following which the threat was declared a hoax. Delhi Police started the investigation to find the person behind the mail. The police found that the mail ID was generated just an hour before the threat mail was sent. After searching the location, police reached Meerut for further investigation.
Here, they came to know that a 13-year-old boy was behind these threats. The minor boy had seen media reports about police catching someone who had made a bomb threat against a Mumbai-bound flight. Influenced by this, the kid wanted to see whether the police could trace him or not.
As a fun, he sent a mail to Delhi Airport, stating that a bomb had been planted in an Air Canada aircraft, flying from Delhi to Toronto. He used the internet from his guardian’s mobile phone.
Sent For Counselling
After sending the threat mail to Delhi Airport, he deleted it from his device. The next morning, when he opened the television, the media was reporting about his threat mails. IGI Airport Deputy Commissioner of Police, Usha Rangnani said that he got scared when the media started reporting about his actions. Even his family members were not aware of this.
Since the accused is a minor, he has been sent for counseling. The Juvenile Court ordered the police to hand him back to his parents. However, his phone has been seized.
During the last 30 days, Indian aviation has witnessed at least 8-9 hoax bomb threat calls. In one case, a mentally challenged wife made a threatening call to Delhi Airport, as her husband was not picking up her call. In one case, the flight was fully evacuated using emergency slides. Some people are influenced by the media reports, and make these threats for cheap publicity stunts.
Unlike the United States of America, India does not have any penalties or punishment for such crimes. In USA, you can face penalties up to $5,000. In case, the call is made with a malicious intent, you can spend five years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both.
