- SpiceJet has wet-leased a fleet of four Boeing 737 from BBN Airlines Indonesia.
- BBN Airlines received its AOC just three months back.
- Now, SpiceJet is operating a total of nine wet-leased aircraft.
In the recently concluded CAPA India Aviation Event, SpiceJet Managing Director Ajay Singh hinted at a potential fundraising of more than Rs 2,000 crore. He said that with these funds, the airline will enhance the number of aircraft in its fleet. In the recent past, SpiceJet has been dependent on wet leases to increase its capacity.
Now, SpiceJet has leased a bunch of more Boeing 737 jets from Indonesian carrier BBN Airlines. It has leased a total of 4 aircraft from the airline including one freighter. In this article, we will take a look at each aircraft.
SpiceJet Leases More Boeing 737
There was no formal announcement or any media report regarding this lease agreement. I was surprised when I saw an aircraft with PK registration on flightradar24 operating a SpiceJet flight. I dug deeper to find that there are four such aircraft, that the airline has leased from BBN Airlines Indonesia.
Here is a look at all these aircraft:
PK-BBH: Ferried from Jakarta to Delhi on 9 June
PK-BBG: Ferried from Jakarta to Delhi on 8 June
PK-BBF: Ferried from Jakarta to Delhi on 8 June
PK-BBN: Ferried from Jakarta to Delhi on 11 June

Out of these, the first three aircraft are passenger jets, while the last one is a freighter.
BBN Airlines Indonesia comes under Avia Solutions Group, which is the largest ACMI provider in the world. Three months ago, the airline received the AOC from DGCA and the Ministry of Transportation Republic Indonesia, which allowed it to start commercial flights.
Deployment on Which Routes?
Now, let us have a look at which SpiceJet is deploying these jets. Here are the routes:
- Delhi – Mumbai – Delhi
- Delhi – Ayodhya – Delhi
- Delhi – North Goa – Delhi
- Delhi – Chennai – Delhi
- Chennai – Ayodhya – Chennai
- Mumbai – Ayodhya – Mumbai
- Delhi – Shirdi – Delhi
- Shirdi – Chennai – Shirdi
PK-BBN, the Boeing 737 freighter arrived yesterday. It will be interesting to see on which route the airline deploys this freighter.
Now, SpiceJet has taken aircraft on wet lease from four airlines: Corendon Airlines, Legend Airlines, Sky Angkor Air, and BBN Airlines Indonesia. In the pic below, you can have a detailed look at the leased fleet.
While Boeing 737s and A320s are operated on scheduled domestic routes, the airline is operating the Airbus A340 on the Delhi to Bangkok route to mitigate the enhanced capacity during the summer season.
SpiceJet MD Ajay Singh has said that it is not easy to kill SpiceJet. In the next two quarters, the airline will be focusing on cleaning up its balance sheet.
