Bengaluru Airport: YouTuber Arrested For Security Breach
Bengaluru Police have arrested a 23-year-old YouTube vlogger named Vikas Gowda. On April 7, he entered the Bengaluru Airport. He had booked the cheapest flight ticket between Bengaluru and Chennai, but his intention was never to fly. In his vlog, he criticized the loose security cover at Bengaluru Airport and boasted about his plan to breach it. He mocked the airport security and claimed that he would remain inside the airport for 24 hours to prove that the security cover could be breached easily.
After security checks at the Terminal gate, he did not proceed to the boarding gate. Instead, he started recording his vlog. With a hidden camera device, he even entered the restricted areas of airport premises and recorded them. This is illegal in many ways. For six hours, he remained inside the airport.
After a few days, he uploaded this recording on his YouTube channel. With this, videos of unauthorized areas were available openly on YouTube, which is illegal and against the trespassing laws.
YouTuber Arrested
An inspector from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) filed a complaint against Vikas Gowda. As per the complaint by CISF officer Murali Lal Meena, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed. He was booked under Sections 448 and 505. Section 448 pertains to trespassing and 505 deals with making false or controversial statements causing public mischief.
Soon after the complaint was filed, Vikas Gowda was arrested and his phone was confiscated. The YouTube video was taken down soon after his arrest. DCP North East, Laxmi Prasad in an interaction with the New Indian Express confirmed his arrest. According to sources, stringent action will be taken against him. Actions such as entering the sensitive area of an airport, recording it, and sharing it on social media are not acceptable at all.
Further, the police officer accused Gowda of deceit. He had booked a ticket for flying from Bengaluru to Chennai. Despite the boarding call, he never boarded the aircraft. Hence, he falsely claimed to be a traveler. He had illegally entered into unauthorized areas to prove that the airport security was loose. Airports are not the place for fun or such stupid tactics. It is a sensitive area and hence, Gowda will face legal percussions. Further investigation is underway.
Divided by Country, United by Stupidity
This incident is not a first of its kind. Bomb threats are very common in India, where many travelers are first-time flyers and have no idea of the sensitivity of airports. But YouTubers are influencers, who are expected to discourage such stupidity, but people are ready to stoop to any low for some views.
In 2023, a YouTuber named Garard Ndela conducted a prank at Newcastle Airport in the United States of America. He tried to prank by acting like an Islamic terrorist and claiming that he had an explosive device. While the action was meant to be a prank, the place was not meant for the same. The airport staff continued with the protocols and the YouTuber was detained.
During the legal proceedings, the judge called him an idiot, who thinks he can do whatever he wants. He was sentenced to 200 hours of unpaid work and nine months.
